This is the most most famous Mayan city in the world. Located in the state of Yucatan, 128 km from Merida in Cancun’s direction, it receives more than one million tourists every year, which makes it the second most visited archaeological zone in Mexico, after Teotihuacan.
It was founded by Mayan groups between 325 and 550 AD. Around the year 800, the Toltecs invaded the area, causing the fusion of the two cultures. The city reached its maximum splendor and became the most powerful of the Yucatan Peninsula at the beginning of the 12th century. It was then when the buildings that are preserved until now were built, such as "El Castillo" or the "Juego de Pelota".
From this influence arose the cult for Kukulcán, the feathered serpent that between Toltecs and Aztecs bore the name of Quetzalcoatl. However, less than half a century after its heyday, a civil war ended with the city.
In 1988, UNESCO designated Chichén Itzá Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2007 it became one of the 7 New Wonders of the World.
